LEED

LEED is both a design methodology and a building certification system for rating the sustainability of green buildings. Buildings are rated to be Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum, the latter being the highest and most difficult rating to achieve.
McCallum Sather Architects designed the first LEED Gold building to be certified in Canada under the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). This building, the Emergency Medical Services Fleet Facility for the Region of Waterloo, has achieved some remarkable levels of efficiency including a 60% reduction in energy use and a 90% reduction in water use relative to typical building standards.
Our firm has also recently certified our Woodward Avenue Environmental Laboratory as LEED Silver. This water testing facility for the City of Hamilton has won numerous awards and is a benchmark of sustainable design for the City. As one of the first truly sustainable laboratories in Ontario, Woodward Labs has an overall energy efficiency of 32.4% over the standard reference building and its water consumption measures result in a water use reduction of over 50%.
Currently the firm is working on certifying three other projects as LEED Silver: the North Hamilton Community Health Centre (Hamilton), the Burlington Transit Operations and Maintenance Centre (Burlington), and the Waterloo North Hydro Administration Office and Fleet Service Centre (Waterloo). As well, MSA is providing LEED Facilitation services for the Oxford County Administration Building in Woodstock, Ontario, and for the Corner Brook City Hall in Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
