Critical Issues

Environmental design is not an isolated issue but the context from which design evolves.  The practice of ecologically conscious architecture must embrace an integrated, holistic process: we share the common goal of integrating human and ecological health concerns, yet the process by which each building is created is unique. In addition to cost, performance, and aesthetics, designers and architects must also consider whether a material or system is ecologically intelligent and socially just.  Team building is also an integral part of the process and is paramount to the success of the project.  A multi-disciplinary approach to design is particularly important when integrating ecological issues into the design process.  Sustainable design is front-loaded:  early decisions are often the most important and sufficient time must be allowed for creative and dynamic conceptual thinking and planning.

We focus on five critical issues: sustainable sites, water conservation, energy and environment, materials and resources and indoor air quality.  Evolving out of these issues are key user / building / technology components, which include the following:

  • Storm Water Management
  • Building Orientation
  • Natural Vegetation
  • Natural Ventilation
  • Building Envelope Insulation
  • Energy Analysis
  • Daylighting
  • Glazing
  • Lighting
  • Indoor Air Quality
  • Material Toxicity
  • Building and Material Reuse
