McMaster University Medical Centre Labour & Delivery Department
McCallum Sather Architects was retained to provide Prime Consulting services to the renovations of the existing Labour and Delivery department at the McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC). This project involves providing a new design for this area of hospital which was out of date and not meeting the hospital’s current needs. This enabling project involves providing a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), two step-down units, an expanded infant resuscitation space, and other associated improvements and upgrades.
The renovations to this area involve bringing the design to meet current building code, accommodate current technological needs, accessibility, infection control, and functional issues. In order to keep the area fully functional during construction, MSA developed a three-stage construction plan. Each stage has multiple phases that will hoard off specific areas during the demolition and construction to ensure that the other areas are unaffected by construction and still able to function normally. The re-design of the department also involved selecting new colours and finishes which are modern, soothing, and will provide for a more comfortable feeling to the patients and new mothers.
